Brain Protection
How is the brain protected?
The brain is the control house of all the body functions. It is the most important part of the body because all activities and processes of the body are handled by it. Since the brain is crucial for control and coordination, it is also a highly sensitive organ, and that’s why it requires special protection.
The Skull and Meninges
The brain is protected by the skull, especially the cranium and meninges. The skull provides an excellent barrier in case of any injury to the head or forehead because the first thing that is affected during any injury or attack on the head or forehead is our brain. Thus, the skull is the main barrier in case of any effect on the brain. Our hair also plays a little role in brain protection.
The main function of the meninges is to protect the central nervous system, i.e. brain and spinal cord. These absorb any external pressure, i.e. any injury or attacks by some hard objects. Although the skull is the main shock absorber, the meninges also absorb the rest of the pressure and save the brain in case of injury. The skull and meninges also save the brain from mechanical stress and impact on the central nervous system. Since the brain is a highly sensitive part of the body, it can be easily affected by external environmental factors (such as pollution, dust particles, or gaseous particles that are easily deposited on the brain) and harmful microorganisms. Furthermore, environmental changes such as temperature and humidity can also have a direct impact on the brain, so the skull and meninges protect the brain from all these factors.
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Besides the skull and meninges, cerebrospinal fluid also plays its part in protecting the brain by nourishing, maintaining stability, acting as a shock absorber, cushioning the brain against the skull, and removing waste materials from the brain.
Blood-Brain Barrier
In addition to the physical protection by the skull and meninges, the brain also needs chemical protection, and this protection is provided by the blood-brain barrier that stops the passage of many toxic substances from the blood into the brain.
Ventricular system
The ventricular system also plays an important role in the protection of the brain. This system comprises the four ventricles which not only provide a passage to the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid but also provide cushioning to the brain, deliver nutrients throughout brain tissues and remove waste material from the brain.
